About "Tango & Beyond"This annual concert was created to benefit Monroe County Youth Services Bureau and to promote the nationwide program for sheltering youth called Project Safe Place. The June 14th, 2006 4th Annual performance of Tango & Beyond focused on a social dance program with free tango lessons and live music by Bloomingtango, directed by Alfredo Minetti, Juan Eduardo Wolf! It took place at 101 E. 6th Street in The Lodge which created a milonga atmosphere ideal for social dancing. The space was decorated by Monroe County Youth Services in a cafe style and the view overlooking the downtown Courthouse square added to the ambience. Singer Yuriria Rodriguez was one of the highlight guest performers at the 2006 concert and dance. Later in the summer, several participants in the the 4th Annual Tango & Beyond performed for a sold-out performance of Astor Piazzolla's operita, Maria de Buenos Aires, at the Buskirk-Chumley. The 4th Annual Tango & Beyond was a wonderful occasion for warming up to that stellar production which was produced by Ex-Art and co-sponsored by the IU Latin American Music Center. The tango scene in Bloomington is growing! For example, The Lodge is now home to a new group of local tango dancers who were introduced to the venue on the evening of the 4th Annual Tango & Beyond. The group, BATO, Bloomington Argentine Tango Organization, has even formed a dance lesson and milonga series! Tango & Beyond is a collage of music and dance from around the world that includes tangos by Astor Piazzolla, virtuoso classical bayan, solo classical guitar, music from Chile, local original music, choreographed dancing, and a free dance lesson for audience members.
